The Red Cross Society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday asked the South Korean Red Cross to guarantee the safety of South Korean pastor Han Sang Ryol after he returned to South Korea from the DPRK, the official news agency KCNA reported.

In a note, the chairman of the Central Committee of the DPRK Red Cross Society said that Han Sang Ryol was expected to "go back to the south side on Aug. 15 via Panmunjom as requested by him," KCNA reported.

The president of the South Korean Red Cross was asked to notify the relevant department to take necessary measures for the safe return of Han from a humanitarian viewpoint.

Han Sang Ryol was called a pro-reunification figure by the DPRK's media. He arrived in Pyongyang on June 12 and said at a news conference on June 22 that he will return to South Korea through the Military Demarcation Line on Aug. 15.
