Democratization of UN Called for
Pyongyang, December 10 (KCNA) -- It is an important and urgent task of the times for establishing a new fair international order to democratize the United Nations, observes Rodong Sinmun Friday in a signed article.
The UN is an international body which was established to prevent the recurrence of such war disaster as the Second World War but it has still failed to ward off wars and disputes worldwide, the article notes, and goes on:
If the UN is to play a leading role in defending global peace, promoting the development of the international community and establishing a new fair international order it is necessary to democratize it through reforms.
Only when the UN is democratized, is it possible to ensure equality in the international relations and fairly settle all the international issues.
What is essential for doing so is to expand the UNSC reflecting the world power structure in 1945.
The most important requirement for reforming the UNSC is to ensure the full representation and interests of the non-aligned and other developing countries.
The UNSC should be reformed in such a way as to make sure that it is represented by all regions on an equal basis, the representation of the non-aligned and other developing countries which account for the overwhelming majority of the UN member nations is fully ensured and its activities are opened to the public to the utmost. Only then will the UN be able to satisfactorily perform its mission and role as an international body.
What is also important for democratizing the UN is to raise the authority of the UN General Assembly.
Only when the UN General Assembly is given the mandate to discuss key international matters such as the issue of ensuring global peace and security and finally examine such major resolutions of the UNSC as those on sanctions and use of armed forces, in particular, is it possible to ensure impartiality in UN activities and this will contribute to holding in check highhanded and arbitrary practices of individual countries.
