BAYAN MUNA condemns the Israeli attack on International Flotilla for Gaza; Supports calls for end to the war against the Palestinian people*

By House Deputy Minority Leader Satur C. Ocampo
and Reps. Teddy Casino and Neri Colmenares

Bayan Muna strongly condemns the Israeli military attack on the Freedom Flotilla of aid bound for the 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who have been isolated from the rest of the world.

Various international media reports said that Israeli commandoes raided and seized the ships of the coalition of Free Gaza Movement (FG), European Campaign to End the Siege of Gaza (ECESG), Insani Yardim Vakfi (IHH), the Perdana Global Peace Organisation, Ship to Gaza Greece, Ship to Gaza Sweden, and the International Committee to Lift the Siege on Gaza that had 10,000 tons of supplies at peace activists of 50 nationalities in international waters.

The attack has happened in international waters, 75 miles off the coast of Israel, in direct violation of international law.

We reiterate that the US-backed Israeli war of aggression is unjust and contributes to the unstable situation in the Middle East. We support all the international diplomatic efforts to put a stop to the war that ultimately aims to exterminate the 1.5 million Palestinian people, including women, children and elderly, in the Gaza area. The Palestinian people must be given justice. Their right to exist and to remain in their homeland must be respected.

In December 2008, the Israeli government launched air bombardments, artillery shelling and a ground invasion that has massacred hundreds and injured thousands of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Homes, places of worship, hospitals, schools, government offices, oil depots, fishing ports, power plants, water facilities and other infrastructure were systematically destroyed. Food, medicine, and medical personnel have been blocked by Israeli troops. This situation gave rise to the Freedom Flotilla that the Israeli government attacked.

We likewise call on the US and other governments to withdraw support to the Israeli government aggression versus the Palestinian people. We call on the members of the United Nations Security Council to pass an urgent resolution to stop the carnage.

We call on all governments to urge the US government to stop its economic and military aid to Israel that has aided its government to starve, subjugate and evict the Palestinian people from their homeland since 1948.

We also urge the Philippine government to condemn the continuing Israeli violations of international law in its drive to erase the Palestinian enclave that also puts the lives and livelihood of Filipino expatriates working in Gaza in grave danger.

Concerned with the escalating situation, Bayan Muna joins all governments, parliamentarians, peoples’ organizations and agencies that have criticized, protested and condemned the US-backed Israeli war against Palestine.

Justice and peace to the people of Palestine!
