News Release – April 9, 2010

Makabayan senatorial bet and Nacionalista Party guest candidate Satur Ocampo today said that the attempts of the Liberal Party (LP) to link Nacionalista Party standard bearer Sen. Manny Villar to the Arroyos have failed to convince his own and running mate Liza Maza's supporters of the existence of such a nefarious alliance.

"As far as we're concerned, there is no 'Villarroyo.' It's all a concoction of the spin doctors of LP to destroy Sen. Villar's credibility and by extension, Makabayan's alliance with him. Rep. Maza and myself and the Makabayan Coalition would not have agreed to be guest candidates of NP if we believed even for a second that Sen. Villar has ties with the Arroyos. Our alliance with Sen. Villar also has to do with our common stand against the corruption of the Macapagal-Arroyo presidency. We would have immediately reconsidered our alliance with Sen. Villar if he had agreed to any form of cooperation with the Arroyos," Ocampo said.

Ocampo said that the LP was evidently determined to run a dirty campaign primarily based on black propaganda. "This also has to do with the undeniable truth that their standard bearer Sen. Noynoy Aquino has no genuine platform of government to present. His track record has shown a mostly blank slate, hence the LP has not much to work on. The strategy to erode and malign the credibility of the NP standard bearer is also in line with their efforts to deflect the public's attention on the LP's own standard bearer’s inherent weaknesses as a public servant," he said.

"Our alliance with Sen. Villar is not a relationship of convenience but one based on principled unities. He agreed to a common agenda with Makabayan and said yes to our legislative proposals. We recognize his stand against the Macapagal-Arroyo government," Ocampo said.
