Libyan rebels to get special fund, says Frattini
Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi, the Libyan rebel leader, has said jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq are on the front lines of the battle against Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.
(ANSA) – Rome, May 5 – Rebels seeking to end Muammar Gaddafi’s 40-year rule in Libya are going to be supported by a ”special fund” from the international alliance that is backing them, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said during Thursday’s Libya Contact Group meeting.
”A temporary financial mechanism will make it possible for funds to reach the (anti-Gaddafi) Libyan National Council in an effective, transparent way,” Frattini said.
The Italian foreign minister added that getting humanitarian aid to the civilian population was a priority and said the possibility of unblocking frozen Libyan government assets outside the North African country and make them available to the Council should be considered.
”This money belongs to the Libyan people. Italy and France have already called on the relevant EU bodies to seek a solution”. Frattini also called on other nations to recognise the Libyan council as its talking partner in the country, as Italy, France and a handful of other nations have. Italy is hoping to get some idea on when NATO-led operations in the North African country, which it recently joined after major reservations, can be brought to an end at the third meeting of the Libya Contact Group.
The previous gatherings were in London and Doha.
